  4. October 2014: Welcome to Dr. Jianhui Yue who joins our group as a postdoctoral researcher. Dr. Yue brings to the PASL group a rich set of expertise on file system, storage and system architecture.
  5. September 2014: Dr. Manju Gorentla Venkata visits the PASL group and gives us an exciting seminar on HPC programming models.

  15. April 2014: Congratulations to Yandong for successfully defending his Ph.D dissertation and becoming a doctor. Yandong's distinguishing achievements and extraordinary role model motivate many fellow students to follow his steps. Yandong: wish you all the best and we miss you, already!
  16. March 2014: Congratulations to Dr. Manjunath Gorentla Venkata for being approved as an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering at Auburn University. He will strengthen the research portfolio of CSSE and the PASL group on programming models for exascale computing.
  17. March 2014: Dr. Xian-He Sun, Distinguished Professor and Department Chair from Illinois Institute of Technology, visits Auburn and gives us an exciting talk on the design of parallel memory systems.
  18. February 2014: Dr. Yu gives a talk at IBM Watson on coordinated task management and scheduling for efficient analytics.
  19. February 2014: Dr. Yu is approved as a joint professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Biological Sciences.
  20. February 2014: Our collaborative paper with Jian Tan and Li Zhang from IBM is accepted to Sigmetrics 2014 at an acceptance rate of 17%! Yandong and Dr. Yu contributed to the system evaluation and analysis of the paper.
  21. February 2014: Dr. Jian Tan from IBM T.J. Watson visits Auburn and gives us an exciting talk on his patented technology: dynamic MapReduce.
  22. February 2014: Congratulations to Teng Wang for his Ph.D. Forum submission being accepted by IPDPS 2014.
  23. February 2014: An REU supplement to the small NSF CSR-core project is awarded to Dr. Yu.
  24. February 2014: Dr. Yu gives a talk at University of Notre Dame on Efficient Systems Design and Management for Big Data Processing.
  25. February 2014: Dr. Yu is awarded a contract from Scitor for image processing and analysis.
  26. January 2014: PASL procured a new cluster of cutting-edge computer servers with Xeon Phi and K40 coprocessors.
  27. January 2014: Congratulations to Dr. Chen for having his H1B approved to join our group. Dr. Chen will strengthen our team for more and higher quality work in 2014 and beyond.

2013

  1. December 2013: Congrats to Yandong and Teng (in collaboration with Robin Goldstone from LLNL) for their paper on Memory-resident MapReduce being accepted to IPDPS 2014.
  2. November 2013: PASL group held a celebration party at Chewacla State Park for the past year and for Yandong's official position to IBM Watson as a Research Staff Member.
  3. November 2013: Our paper on Virtual Shuffling is accepted by the IEEE Transactions on Computers.
  4. October 2013: Dr. Sarp Oral from Oak Ridge National Lab gives an exciting talk at the CSSE Departmental seminar on Developing Fast Petabyte File System.
  5. October 2013: Dr. Yu receives a continuing grant from Oak Ridge National Lab on burst buffer research.
  6. September 2013: Dr. Yu is approved as a senior member of IEEE.
  7. September 2013: Dr. Yu is awarded a 2-year grant from NSF (Award ACI-1340947), jointly with Bliss Bailey from Office of Information Technology, to build Campus-Wide Network Infrastructure.
  8. August 2013: Congratulations to Xiaobing for successfully passing his master thesis defense and joining LogicMonitor Inc.! Xiaobing has had a very productive year within the PASL group. He sets up an exemplary model for all students with both quality objectives and excellent execution.
  9. August 2013: Congratulations to Yandong for winning the 2013 best research award among summer interns at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Excellent Ambassador, Yandong!
  10. July 2013: Dr. Yu is awarded a three-year grant (Award CNS-1320016) for big data and cloud computing research from NSF.

  25. Feb. 2013: PASL graduate students were very excited to present their research to IBM visitors headed by Dr. Anjul Bhambhri from IBM big data analytics group.
  26. Feb. 2013: Bin Wang's poster to 2013 IPDPS Ph.D. forum is selected for presentation at Boston, MA. Congrats, Bin!
  27. Feb. 2013: Dr. Yu is promoted to associate professor with tenure, effective from Fall 2013.
  28. Feb. 2013: Dr. Yu receives an award on object storage analysis from Oak Ridge National Lab.
  29. Jan. 2013: Dr. Yu and a team of leading researchers in the University are selected for a Level-4 Intramural Program award by the Office of Vice President of Research. The total grant size is $300,000 to build a uniform campus-wide computing and storage platform.
  30. Jan. 2013: Congratulations to Cong, Yandong and Zhuo for their paper on scalable AlltoAllV being accepted to CCGrid'13 (acceptance rate 22%).

2012

  1. Dec. 2012: Congratulations to Yandong, Cong and Xiaobing for their paper on efficient shuffling for Hadoop being accepted to IPDPS'13 (acceptance rate 21%).
  2. Oct 2012: Governor Bentley announces that Dr. Weikuan Yu is selected as one of the 15 Alabama Innovation Awardees.
  3. Aug 2012: Welcome PASL students back from successful summer internships. Congrats to Xinyu Que on his extended internship at IBM Watson.
  4. Aug 2012: Congrats to Dr. Weikuan Yu for receiving an award from ORNL on Adaptive Data Management for Cloud Computing.

  6. July 2012: Our joint paper with ORNL on soft error classification is selected to the SC'12 conference.
  7. Jun. 2012: Congratulations to Yuan Tian on being selected as the First Prize Graduate Winner of ACM 2012 SRC Grand Finals. Our entire group is thrilled with this world-class honor. To receive the award, Yuan Tian and Dr. Yu attended the ACM 2012 Award Ceremony, where this year ACM celebrated Alan Turing's 100th Birthday. War Eagle!
  8. Jun. 2012: Congratulations to Yuan Tian being selected as of EU-US Summer School on HPC Challenges in Computational Science 2012 at Dublin, Ireland. Tian is selected as one of the 50 participants from more than 200 applicants for this 5-days program. The expense is fully covered including round-trip flight tickets, hotel, meal and logistics.
  9. May. 2012: Congratulations to Yuan Tian, Zhuo Liu, Bin Wang and Patrick Carpenter for their papers being selected to the MASCOTS'12 conference.
  10. Apr. 2012: Congratulations to Yuan Tian on being selected as the 2012 outstanding international graduate student of CSSE.
  11. Mar. 2012: Congratulations to PASL students on obtaining internship opportunities to join prestigious research institutions in the Summer of 2012.   12. Mar. 2012: Dr. Yu gives an invited talk at IBM T.J. Watson on Accelerating Hadoop with Scalable Algorithms on RDMA Networks.
  13. Mar. 2012: Congratulations to Xinyu Que on winning the 2nd Place Award in the 2012 Graduate Research Competition of College of Engineering.

2011

  1. Nov. 2011: Congratulations to Xinyu Que on winning the HPC George Michael Fellowship Award from SC11, the premium HPC conference in Seattle, WA. As a part of this fellowship, Xinyu receives a monetary award of $5,000 and full travel support to attend SC11 and SC12. War Eagle!!
  2. Nov. 2011: Our Hadoop Acceleration framework is released by Mellanox as UDA 2.0 for fast Unstructured Data Acceleration. In the revised release announcement, Mellanox officially acknowledges the contribution from our PASL group and Dr. Yu.
  3. Nov. 2011: Thanks for the generous support from SC11. Yuan Tian attends SC11 under the Broad Engagement program; Patrick Carpenter and Yandong Wang attend SC11 as student volunteers.
  4. Oct. 2011: Dr. Weikuan Yu gives an invited Keynote Talk at the 2011 HPC China High Performance Advisory Council meeting in Jinan, China.
  5. Oct. 2011: Dr. Weikuan Yu tours several research institutes in China and gives invited talks at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
  6. Oct. 2011: Dr. Weikuan Yu gives an invited talk at GaTech in the 6th Open Cirrus Summit to leading researchers on cloud computing and big data analytics.
  7. Sept. 2011: Dr. Weikuan Yu gives a Hadoop tutorial in the Cluster Computing conference. The number of attendees ranges around 15 for the most part of the tutorial, and peaks at 19.
  8. Sept. 2011: Dr. Weikuan Yu gives an invited talk on enabling scalable I/O for NASA climate applications in the 3rd ADIOS meeting at ORNL.
  9. Sept. 2011: NVIDIA selects Dr. Weikuan Yu to lead a CUDA teaching center at Auburn University on enabling multidisciplinary scientific computing with GPGPU technologies.
  10. Aug. 2011: Dr. Weikuan Yu is awarded a contract from Mellanox to continue his effort on Hadoop Scalability Enhancements for Big Data Analytics.
  11. Aug. 2011:The PASL group is thrilled with the visit of Mr. John Monson, Vice President of Mellanox. Mr. Monson honors the PASL group with an official recognition as a research partner of Mellanox Technologies, Inc.
  12. Jul. 2011: As a part of a team effort, PASL group's contribution to ADIOS has been featured in HPCwire.
  13. Jul. 2011: Dr. Weikuan Yu particiates in a team that wins 7.9 million core-hours from the Cray XT5 supercomputer at the National Institute for Computational Sciences hosted by University of Tennessee Knoxville. The monetary value of the hours awarded is around $400,000.
  14. June 2011: Our new 50-node heterogenous CPU+GPGPU cluster has arrived.
  15. June 2011: Our paper on BMF: Bitmapped Mass Fingerprinting for fast protein identification has been accepted to Cluster 2011.
  16. June 2011: Our paper on Elastic Data Organization for ADIOS has been accepted to Cluster 2011.
  17. June 2011: Our paper on Hadoop Acceleration through Network Levitated Merging has been accepted to SC11.
  18. June 2011: Congratulations to Yuan Tian on winning the first prize in the Student Research Competition of 2011 International Conference on Supercomputing (ICS'11), the flagship supercomputing conference of ACM. War Eagle!!
  19. June 2011: A joint tutorial on Hadoop Acceleration with Emerging Interconnect Technologies by Dr. Weikuan Yu and Dror Goldenberg, VP of Mellanox, has been accepted, and will be hosted at Cluster 2011. Please join us for an in-depth walkthrough of the cutting-edge cloud computing paradigm for data analytics at Austin, Texas on September 26th.
  20. May. 2011: Our paper (by Dr. Weikuan Yu and Xinyu Que, along with colleagues from ORNL) on virtual topologies for scalable global address space programming model has been accepted by ICPP 2011, to be presented in September at Taipei, Taiwan.
  21. May. 2011: Congratulations to Dr. Weikuan Yu on winning a NASA award to enable elastic parallel I/O for NASA climate applications. Dr. Yu leads the multi-institution project with colleagues from NASA GSFC and ORNL.
